South Texas Outreach
Circuit Librarian Health Information Network (CLHIN)
Established in 1989, the CLHIN service provides librarians who visit a circuit of 18 health care facilities in the Rio Grande Valley, Mid Rio Grande Border, and Winter Garden areas of South Texas. The outreach librarians conduct literature searches and consult about library services. Documents, usually in the form of journal articles, are provided electronically, fax or mail from the Briscoe Library in San Antonio. The Briscoe Library is a designated Resource Library within the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine,
South Central Region (NN/LM SCR) which includes the five state region of Arkansas,
Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The NN/LM SCR is part of the larger
National Network of Libraries of Medicine.
As a Resource Library, the Briscoe Library provides outreach services to health
professionals located in 33 counties of South Texas.
These counties are:
Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Brooks, Cameron, Comal, Dimmit, Duval, Edwards, Frio, Hidalgo, Jim Wells, Jim Hogg, Kendall, Kenedy, Kerr, Kinney, Kleberg, La Salle, Live Oak, McMullen, Maverick, Medina, Nueces, Real, Starr, Uvalde, Valverde, Webb, Willacy, Wilson, Zapata, and Zavala.
Outreach services include onsite instruction in the use of National Library of Medicine databases and search systems such as PubMed - MEDLINE; Loansome Doc and other document delivery services; literature searches conducted by professional medical librarians for a nominal fee; interlibrary loan of books and journal articles; and consultation on library collections and services.
