RAHC librarian is winner of 2009 DeBakey Library Outreach Award

The Friends of the National Library of Medicine have announced that Greysi Reyna, Assistant Library Director for the Ramirez Library at the Regional Academic Health Center, has been awarded the Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award for 2009. The award, established in the early 1990s to recognize contributions to medical education and librarianship by Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., honors the work of a health sciences librarian who works in underserved or rural communities. Greysi will accept the award in Washington, DC on May 5.

Greysi has provided librarian services along the Texas-Mexico border in Cameron and Hidalgo counties since 1995. Hospitals and clinics in this area serve predominantly Hispanic populations in urban and rural communities, as well as in the colonias, unincorporated areas that frequently lack potable water, have inadequate sewage systems and a shortage of decent, safe and sanitary housing. Over the years, Greysi has responded to hundreds of requests for literature searches, and has provided thousands of documents in response to requests for information about the latest disease treatment, diagnosis and quality improvement.

A key element of Greysi's career has been the strengthening of community-based health information resources. Using materials and online resources developed by the National Library of Medicine, she has trained many groups of promotores - community health workers - to provide reliable health information in their communities. In 2001 she worked with librarians in the South Texas Independent School District to develop the MedlinePlus Peer Tutor Project at Med High in Mercedes, Texas. This project was so successful that it was awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services Award in 2005.

This is the second time a UT Health Science Center librarian has been recognized for her outreach efforts. Mary Jo Dwyer received the first Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award in 1993.

Ramirez Library plans conference to train community health workers in the Rio Grande Valley border region

Planning is underway for the 4th Bi-National Conference for Promotores de Salud. The conference is being
organized by the Mario E. Ramirez, M.D. Library at the Regional Academic Health Center in partnership with several agencies in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Supported through a 2009 Express Outreach Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine,
South Center Region (NN/LM SCR), the conference will build upon the success of past promotores
conferences and provide much-needed learning opportunities for community health workers in the Rio
Grande Valley border region. Travel stipends to attend the conference will be made available to librarians
interested in collaborating with community health workers to establish similar programs in their own
communities. The conference will be scheduled to coincide with Bi-National Health Week, October 5th-9th, 2009. Conference program details and registration information will be announced at a later date.

This 60-minute, live webinar will introduce strategies for posting effective YouTube videos to connect with students. Justin Ware, the instructor for this webinar, began his career with the
University of Minnesota's University News Service in March 2007 as a public relations representative.

• He has since become the assistant director for broadcast and new media, working to expand the use of multimedia communications by creating video news releases, b-roll and a variety of other visual and audio material.
• He also works with university departments to enhance their media presence, conducts media training for University experts and helps connect local television and radio stations with University sources.
• The University of Minnesota's YouTube channel is rated as one of the most frequently watched on
  YouTube's list of colleges and universities.

Briscoe Library book give-away- May 13th

The library will have a book give-away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. The book give-away will start at 8 am at the entrance to the library. Books to be included in the giveaway are old editions withdrawn from the library's collection, or donations given to the library but not needed for the collection. All give-away books are available on a first-come, first-served basis. getHIP is honored as Bexar Library Association Project of the Year

The getHIP: Health Information Plus school health conference held at the UT Health Science Center on June 7, 2008 was honored as the 2008 recipient of the Bexar Library Association's Project of the Year. Rajia Tobia, Executive Director of Libraries, accepted the award at the spring meeting of the Bexar Library Association on April 23 at the McNay Art Institute.

getHIP was collaboratively developed by the UT HSC Libraries, in partnership with Education Service Center-Region 20, the UT Austin School of Information, and librarians from Health Careers High School and Baptist Health System in San Antonio and was jointly sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and the South Central Area Health Education Center.

Over 120 school media specialists, teachers, school nurses, and counselors from San Antonio and across South Texas attended the conference which focused on health issues of concern to educators. Further information about getHIP can be found at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/events/gethip.cfm.

Briscoe Library sets hours for finals and Memorial weekend

The UT HSC Briscoe Library will have extended hours during finals until May 14th as follows:

Sunday 10 am - 2 am Monday - Thursday 7 am - 2 am
Friday 7 am - 10 pm Saturday 9 am - 10 pm

The library and the scheduling office have collaborated to make two classrooms available for overnight study through May 15th. Rooms 2.022 and 2.030, located in the corridor beneath Subway, are available to any student, Sunday - Thursday from 11 pm each evening through 6 am the next morning. On Fridays and Saturdays during this time, the rooms will be open starting at 9 pm until 6 am the next morning. The scheduling office accepts reservations from students wishing to reserve a private room for a study group in the same area for other dates and times depending on availability.

Memorial Weekend hours are as follows:

Friday, May 22 7 am - 6 pm Saturday May 23 9 am - 6 pm
Closed on Sunday, May 24, and Monday May 25, 2009 in observance of Memorial Day.

New linking tool for online journal articles: UT HSC Link

Have you ever tried to e-mail someone a link to a journal article? Either it's so long that the recipient's e-mail program doesn't recognize it all as one link, or it won't work on a different computer or at a different time. Librarians have developed a new tool — UT HSC Link — that will help with both of these problems.

• UT HSC Link (http://link.uthscsa.edu) will generate a direct link to any article that has a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), a PubMed Identifier (PMID), or a PubMed Central Identifier (PMCID), as long as the UT Health Science Center Libraries have an online subscription to it or it is available online for free.
• DOIs can usually be found on the title page of electronic journal articles, and PMIDs and MCIDs can be found on citations within the National Library of Medicine's PubMed and PubMed Central Systems Users who click on one of these links will be prompted to sign in to the Off-Campus login if necessary, and are then taken to the full text of the article if online access is available through the library.
• If the library cannot offer online access, UT HSC Link prompts the user to check the library catalog for a print version and offers a link to the ILLiad service to order a copy.

To create a UT HSC Link, use the form at http://link.uthscsa.edu. Just copy and paste in the DOI, PMID, or PMCID, and the page will create the link for you, ready to be copied into an e-mail, a Blackboard class page, or a bookmark. For articles that can be found in PubMed, the form will also display the full citation in APA or Vancouver format, which also helps to confirm that you have the correct article.

You can also create the link yourself without the form: just type http:// link.uthscsa.edu/ followed by the full DOI, PMID, or PMCID. For example:

• http://link.uthscsa.edu/10.1080/02763860802616110 (using a DOI),
• http://link.uthscsa.edu/17252064 (using a PMID), or
• http://link.uthscsa.edu/PMC227261 (using a PMCID).

The UT Health Science Center Libraries will sponsor a trial of SPORTDiscus through Sunday, May 31st. SPORTDiscus is a comprehensive database of full text articles from sports and sports medicine journals with full-text coverage datingback to 1985.

Briscoe Library journal browsing area features core health sciences periodicals

The Briscoe Library has added an area on the main floor for browsing selected current print journals. We have very limited space because more computers are now located on Information Commons area on the 3rd floor, so the browsing area will hold the current issue of 20 selected titles. All other journals can be found in the stacks on the 4th floor. The 20 titles selected for this browsing area (see list below) are considered "core" titles and had high print use last year.

Exhibit focuses on occupational therapy as healing art and as vocation

To focus on the good work being done in the field of occupational therapy, Kimberly Vogel, EdD, OTR, Eva
Alaniz, OTS, Debora Ridener, OTS, and Max Hernandez, OTS, of the School of Health Professions have
mounted an exhibit which will be on view until mid-May in the lecture hall foyer display cases.

H1N1 influenza resources

In response to the ongoing H1N1 Influenza outbreak, library staff have assembled a collection of resources about the disease. H1N1 Resources includes links to official government and international organization websites, clinical guidance, Spanish language materials, as well as current articles. Briscoe Library mounts "Go Green" exhibit to showcase new recycling options in the library

It is easier than ever to recycle when visiting the Briscoe Library: New recycle bins for paper, as well as for cans and plastic bottles, have been located at various places throughout the library.

To learn more, visit the "Go Green" exhibit in the glass cases near the Information Desk and learn ways you can "go green" in the library. In addition to maps showing the locations of the new recycling stations, you will also learn interesting facts about recycling and how it benefits the environment, as well as information about the UT Health Science Center's recycling program.

The "Go Green" exhibit was created by Karen Eads, Library Assistant, and Lyndsay Riggs, Administrative Assistant.

Safeguarding the library's collection- the exit gate alarm

Library staff are charged to safeguard the library collections. The exit gate is designed to detect the removal of library materials. The alarm will sound if any library item passes through the gate. To avoid the alarm sounding, patrons can hand over library materials to Circulation desk staff prior to walking through the exit gate. Circulation staff will then return the item(s) to the patron after checking the item's borrowed status. If the alarm sounds, you will be stopped by Circulation staff and asked to check for library materials in your possession. This ensures that items are properly checked out. We hope that this will reduce the number of overdue and missing books. We want to make sure that library materials are available when our patrons need them.
