SMILE project targets information literacy for dental health professionals and promotoras
A team of librarians will be traveling throughout South Texas during the next ten
months, educating dental health professionals about information resources that are
available to them through the National Library of Medicine and the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio Libraries. SMILE— the project name is an
acronym for Sharing Medline®/MedlinePlus® for Information Literacy Education— is
a $25,000 contract from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central
Region (NN/LM SCR) that provides funding for community outreach education.
As one of two public health projects funded by the NN/LM SCR, SMILE targets dental
health professionals and dental health promotoras, providing training and resources for
both professional education and patient education.
In February, librarians Julie Gaines, Linda Levy and Keith Cogdill conducted the first of
several classes for dentists and dental hygienists from Gateway Clinic in Laredo and from
the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.

Blog will chronicle construction in Briscoe Library
A new blog has been created to provide information on construction that is planned this year in the Briscoe Library. The blog contains construction updates, floor plans, and photos. Readers are invited to contribute feedback and comments. The blog can be found at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/renovate/.
Construction of offices for the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET) began on Monday, February 25. The offices will be located in a corner of the 4th floor where group study rooms are currently located. Construction is expected to be completed by early May of 2008. The 4th floor group study rooms will no longer be available, but the rest of the 4th floor will be accessible for journal use or study. Study rooms on the 2nd and 5th floors, and individual study
rooms on the 4th floor, are not affected by the construction.
Meanwhile, plans are in the works to build nine group study rooms in a more desirable location on the 3rd floor (main floor) of the library building along the windows facing the library parking lot. The new study rooms will have sliding glass doors to allow for natural lighting and easy access. They will be larger than the ones they are replacing on the 4th floor, with extra soundproofing, electric outlets, data lines, flat panel monitors and whiteboards. The eight group study rooms on the 5th floor will continue to be available.
Send your comments or questions about the construction projects to Rajia Tobia, Interim Executive Director of Libraries, at tobia@uthscsa.edu or Jonquil Feldman, Associate Library Director for Public Services, feldman@uthscsa.edu.

Public access policy for NIH-funded investigators: Library Web site answers important questions
The UT Health Science Center Libraries have published a Web page, "The NIH Public
Access Policy and You," at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/scholar/nih_policy.cfm. The
Web page is designed to assist UT Health Science Center investigators to comply with the
new mandatory NIH Public Access policy. The page includes general information about
the policy, an explanation of which articles are subject to the requirements, a handy stepby-
step compliance checklist, a list of journals that deposit manuscripts for authors, a
glossary of terms, and lots of links to further information and resources.
Last month's News from the UT HSC Libraries (http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/publications/libnews/2008/ln0208.cfm#access),
contained an article describing important new provisions of the recently-revised NIH
Public Access Policy. The policy requires investigators and authors to deposit final
manuscripts of all articles resulting from NIH-funded research into PubMed Central upon
their acceptance for publication. This further means that researchers will need to retain
(or secure from their publishers) the right to make that deposit. The policy also requires
investigators to include the PubMed Central ID when citing those articles in applications,
proposals and progress reports.
We hope that "The NIH Public Access Policy and You" Web page will assist authors in
complying with the new NIH policy. We welcome comments and suggestions about the
Web page and librarians are available to answer questions regarding the new NIH policy.
