UTHSCSA Library Brown Bag Event: Film on Health Crisis in Haiti

Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Howe Conference Room, Fifth Floor, Briscoe Library—Open to all, bring your lunch

Once There was a Country: Revisiting Haiti,
a film documentary narrated by Maya Angelou
http://www.oncetherewasacountry.com/home.html

With a long history of political instability and a collapsing infrastructure, Haiti is a country notorious for its soaring infectious disease rate. Self-sustaining healthcare programs such as Project Medishare, co-founded by Dr. Arthur Fournier, are helping to alleviate poverty and illness in even the most isolated regions of the island nation. On more than 100 trips to Haiti, Dr. Fournier has coordinated student and faculty teams to establish a medical exchange program between teaching hospitals in Haiti and medical schools in the United States. In stirring personal stories, Once There was a Country attests to the courage and dignity of the Haitian people and the hope for a better life. Dr. Fournier will be the speaker at the Annual Dinner of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library on November 12.

For more information please contact Pennie Borchers, Special Collections Librarian, borchers@uthscsa.edu.

Friends of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library Welcome Arthur M. Fournier, M.D.

AIDS as a Zombie Curse: Why Science Alone Cannot Win the War
Dinner and Presentation, Monday, November 12, 2007, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.
Doubletree Hotel 37 NE Loop 410 at McCullough
Sponsored by The Friends of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library

Guest Speaker: Arthur M. Fournier, M.D.
Professor and Vice Chairman of the Family Medicine & Community Health Department
Associate Dean for Community Health Affairs
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
Author of The Zombie Curse: a Doctor’s 25-year Journey into the Heart of the AIDS Epidemic in Haiti

Dr. Fournier is recognized for his tireless efforts in community healthcare - for his work in the Haitian-American community in Miami and his dedicated efforts toward alleviating poverty and illness in Haiti. On more than 100 trips to the island nation, reaching the remotest regions of the country, Dr. Fournier has coordinated student and faculty teams in an effort to rebuild the medical infrastructure of Haiti. His successes with Project Medishare, the 501(c)3 he co-founded in 1994, have led to a Lifetime Achievement in Transcultural Medicine Award, presented by the International Institute of Human Understanding in 2001, and to his placement in Marquis Who’s Who in America.

During the November 12th presentation, Dr. Fournier will share his stories about HIV/AIDS, voodoo, the student response to healthcare challenges, and the remarkably resilient Haitian people. To make reservations for the dinner-presentation please contact Pennie Borchers, Special Collections Librarian, borchers@uthscsa.edu.

Scholarly Publishing and Open Access Webcast Coming in November

The world of scientific, technical and medical publishing is changing rapidly, giving rise to new concerns, complexities -- and opportunities. The Library can be an important partner and resource to help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your options as a researcher and author.

To help introduce the most important issues, UTHSCSA Library will be sponsoring and screening an educational Webcast from the Medical Library Association entitled Scholarly Publishing and Open Access: Straight Talk on Tuesday November 20, from 1pm to 3pm. Texas State Library and Archives Commission has purchased licenses for the Webcast to be shown in the Briscoe Library and in the Mario E. Ramirez Library at the RAHC.

Additional opportunities for discussion of issues in scholarly communication will be planned if interest is expressed. Details will follow in the November issue of Library News.
