The Library's electronic journal collection now includes Science Online. This full-text version of the popular journal Science is provided through a consortium subscription with the University of Texas System. The full text of the current issue of Science is available, and back issues are included online from mid-1995. A unique feature of Science Online is the "Science Collections," which allow the user to browse all research papers and news stories published in Science from 1995 to the present by broad subject categories. This feature also includes links to PubMed, the National Library of Medicine interface to MEDLINE, as well as the option to search for related articles in Science Online, and subject alert options.
Links are available to Science Online through the Library's catalog, through the "What's New" section on the Library's home page, and through the listing of electronic journals on the home page. You may also access Science Online directly at http://www.sciencemag.org. Off-campus access to Science Online is limited to UTHSCSA-affiliated persons who use DCCI as their Internet provider, because IP authentication is required. Questions or comments about Science Online should be sent to Rajia Tobia, A.M.L.S., Associate Library Director for Outreach and Collection Development at 567-2400 or tobia@uthscsa.edu.

Library staff will begin a book "weeding" project in January. Weeding (deselection and withdrawal of materials) is an important component of collection development in libraries. Weeding has several purposes including freeing shelf space for newer volumes, removal of no longer needed older editions of textbooks, withdrawal of materials that may contain dated information, removal of books that were added to the library's collection but are no longer in scope, and withdrawal of books that are no longer used or that are in poor condition. During weeding projects, libraries also identify books that need repair and subject areas of the collection for which new books should be purchased.
The Briscoe Library's book collection has undergone selective weeding over the years; however, this will be the first systematic weeding of the entire book collection. Library staff anticipate that it will take several months to review and weed the collection. Before any books are withdrawn from the collection, we will post the list of books being considered for weeding on the Library's Web site. Departmental contacts for the Library Liaison program and department chairs and division heads will also be notified of books that are planned for discard. Any books requested for retention in the Library's collection will be kept. Questions about the weeding project can be directed to Rajia Tobia, M.A.L.S., Associate Library Director for Outreach and Collection Development, at 567-2400 or tobia@uthscsa.edu.

Electronic Journals in the Library Collection

This chart shows the number of journals available electronically via the Library's systems, including local OVID collections, Journals@Ovid, and the Academic Press IDEAL system. We anticipate significant growth in FY99; however, this is still a fraction of the Library's subscription list of more than 1900 serials.
