Alternative Medicine Bibliography SeriesThe following resources representing the Library’s collections in the areas of alternative and complementary medicine, acupuncture, and herbal medicine are available through the Library’s catalog at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/cfaction/blis.cfm. Most of the databases and electronic resources can be accessed from locations off campus; however, due to licensing restrictions remote access is limited to Health Science Center faculty, staff, and students who are registered Library borrowers and who have set a PIN. DatabasesThe entire list of databases available through the Library can be found under the Database tab on the Library’s home page at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu. Alt-Health Watch focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It includes full-text articles from more than 170 international peer-reviewed and professional journals, magazines, reports, proceedings, association & consumer newsletters, plus hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts. MEDLINE is a general biomedical database that includes information on alternative treatments and procedures. The most effective way to search MEDLINE involves the use of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), which are terms that have been formally assigned to the citations to describe the topics of the article. The most relevant MeSH term is “complementary therapies.” For a comprehensive search, this term should be “exploded” to include narrower closely-related concepts such as “acupuncture points,” “ traditional medicine,” “holistic health,” “mind-body and relaxation techniques,” “sensory art therapies,” and “spiritual therapies.” “Herbal medicine” is also available as a search term. Drug names should be searched directly. Micromedex is a full-text resource containing detailed drug information, such as clinical applications, adverse effects, pharmacokinetics, dosing information, drug interactions, use in pregnancy, etc. Drugs may be searched by generic name, by trade name, or by “street” name. Within Micromedex, searching can be limited to the Alternative Medicine database. Patient information is available through the AltCareDex® System.
