4th Binational Conference for Promotores de Salud
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Libraries will be hosting the 2009 Binational Conference for Promotores de Salud on Friday, October 2nd. Staff at the Mario E. Ramirez, M.D. Library at the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen are planning this conference in partnership with several community agencies. This year, the one-day conference will be held at the Isla Grand Beach Resort on South Padre Island. The conference theme is "Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies" and will include educational programs focused on mental health topics for over 200 promotores de salud (community health workers) from the region.
In addition, the conference will also provide a unique opportunity for librarians, called the “Librarians’ Experience”. This program will sponsor five librarians’ attendance at the conference so they may learn more about possible collaborations between libraries and promotores on efforts to disseminate locally relevant health information to the broader community.
Dr. Ana Nogales, author, community leader and Clinical Director of the nonprofit organization, Casa de la Familia in Los Angeles, CA, will serve as the keynote speaker. This organization works to serve the emotional needs of children, teens, adults and the elderly who have suffered psychological trauma. Casa de la Familia features a program called Promotores de Salud Mental, which is dedicated to the outreach and engagement of mental health for the Latino community.
