SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)


The SciFinder Scholar software, available in Windows, Macintosh OS X and Macintosh OS 9 and earlier versions, is restricted to UTHSCSA IP addresses and is for use by faculty, staff, and students only.

The Getting Started Guide is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and earlier.

Windows
Upgrading or First-Time Installation or Windows Add-Ons

If you are upgrading from a previous version of SciFinder Scholar, install the program in the same location as the previous version (usually C:\SFSCHLR). Download the file SFS2006.exe (40 MB size).

To install the SciFinder Scholar software, double-click SFS2006.exe. Install into the existing SciFinder Scholar folder using the "Typical" setup. During installation you may be asked if you have a Custom Site Files disk. Answer "No" and continue with the installation. If you want to install the toolbar for Internet Explorer, click Yes.

If you receive a message that SciFinder Scholar is unable to establish a connection, make sure you have an updated copy of site.prf in the main SciFinder Scholar folder.

Install any Windows Add-Ons, such as the 3D viewer.

If you are installing SciFinder Scholar for the first time, download the files, SFS2006.exe(40 MB size) and site.prf . All files are necessary to access the databases.

Copy the site.prf file into the main SciFinder Scholar folder, typically C:\SFSCHLR.

Add-on Software for Windows
SciFinder Scholar Toolbar for use with Microsoft® Internet Explorer (Windows 98/2000/XP/Me/NT4.0)

Quickly initiate Explore tasks for terms of interest using the SciFinder Scholar Toolbar within Internet Explorer.

  1. Download SciFinderScholarToolbar.exe and save it to a temporary folder. (~23.7 MB self-extracting executable.)
  2. Double-click the "SciFinderScholarToolbar.exe" icon to install the toolbar.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
After installation, open Internet Explorer and select View > Toolbars > SciFinder Scholar Bar to display the toolbar.

Discovery Studio™ Viewer
Discovery Studio™ Viewer products from Accelrys are visualization tools that allow you to view 3D molecular models for structure results.
  • DS ViewerPro may be obtained from Accelrys at http://www.accelrys.com/dstudio/ds_viewer/.
  • ViewerLite (the previous 3D viewer used by SciFinder Scholar) is no longer supported by Accelrys, Inc. but, for a limited time, may be downloaded free of charge by SciFinder Scholar customers only. ViewerLite is provided "AS IS", without warranties of any kind.

A software patch that corrects the viewing of 3D models with Accelrys Viewer products when accessed from SciFinder is available at http://www.accelrys.com/support/life/patches/ds_viewerpro/.

Note: This patch works for version 5.0 of both DS ViewerPro and ViewerLite.

Macintosh OS X(OS 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4)

  1. Download SciFinder Scholar scholar-osx.dmg (a Macintosh Disk Image File) to your desktop or a download folder on your OS X drive.
  2. Double-click "scholar-osx.dmg" to mount SciFinder Scholar (a Desktop Volume containing the SciFinder Scholar Application Package).
  3. Open the SciFinder Scholar Volume if it does not auto-open.
  4. Drag and drop the SciFinder Scholar Application Package to your Applications folder.
  5. Eject (Unmount) the desktop SciFinder Scholar Volume.
  6. Copy the site.prf to the user profile at Users:USERNAME:Library:Application Support: SciFinder Scholar. You may need to create the SciFinder Scholar folder if it is not already there.


Macintosh(OS 7.61, 8.x, 9.x including Mac OS X in Classic Mode)
Upgrading or First-Time Installation

If you are upgrading from a previous version, download the compressed file SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 Mac and decompress. Open the folder and click on the SciFinder Scholar icon to start the program. Do the "Easy" install to the same folder (usually, SciFinder Scholar) as the previous installation.

If you receive a message that SciFinder Scholar is unable to establish a connection, make sure you have an updated copy of site.prf in the main SciFinder Scholar folder.

If this is a first-time installation of SciFinder Scholar, download and decompress the compressed file SciFinder Scholar 2004 and the uncompressed file site.prf. Open the folder and click on the SciFinder Scholar icon to start the program and follow the prompts for an "Easy" install.

Copy the site.prf file into the main SciFinder Scholar folder.
