LIBRARY DIVISIONS
- Office of the Director
The Office of the Executive Director of Libraries, headed by Rajia Tobia, A.M.L.S., AHIP, Executive Director of Libraries, is responsible for overall planning, budget and personnel administration, building maintenance, staff development, and official communication with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and external institutions and organizations.
- Collection Resources

The Collection Resources division, led by Susan Buentello, Associate Library Director for Collection Resources, is responsible for print and online journal and book acquisitions, electronic resource licensing and management, consortium participation, cataloging, and binding.
- Public Services

The Public Services division, led by Jonquil Feldman, M.A.L.S., is responsible for services at the Information Desk, Circulation and Reserves, stacks maintenance, instruction in information access and Document Delivery services.
Access Services circulates library materials, maintains the stacks, operates the Document Delivery and Photocopy services.
Document Delivery provides copies of Library materials in print or electronic format.
Informational and Reference Services assists library users in finding the resources they need, in print and online formats. Support is provided for users of computer-based learning programs, PDAs and digital scanners.
Instructional Services coordinate a variety of workshops designed to help clients use the library and its resources more efficiently. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, workshops can be tailored to a group's needs. Classes are offered at the Briscoe Library as well at other classrooms on campus. Individual consultations are also available.
- South Texas Regional Outreach Services

The South Texas Regional Information Services division, led by Keith Cogdill, Ph.D, includes the library's branch locations, its outreach and circuit librarian programs and interlibrary loan services. The community health information blog, 'Staying Well. Connected.' is also produced by South Texas Regional Information Services.
The University Health Center Downtown Library extends library services to users at the University Health Center Downtown location. The Mario E. Ramirez, M.D. Library at the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen provides library services to UT Health Science Center medical students, residents, faculty and area physicians in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The Laredo Campus Extension Library provides services, book collection, and access to the UT Health Science Center library's electronic resources for the benefit of students in the programs affiliated with the Health Science Center’s School of Allied Health Sciences and dental programs. The Jesse H. Jones Comprehensive Research Library provides library services to students, faculty and researchers at the Texas Research Park.
The library's outreach program is anchored by an annual outreach subcontract with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR) and the Circuit Librarian Health Information Network (CLHIN) program, begun in 1989. The NN/LM SCR outreach subcontract supports outreach activities such as health fairs for the public and training events for health professionals. The CLHIN program provides information services to member hospitals and clinics in South Texas. Services include MEDLINE and other database searches, document delivery and consultation on information management.
Interlibrary Loan obtains materials not available in the Library's collection from other libraries and also loans or provides copies of materials in our collection to other libraries.
- Library Technology and Historical Collections
Library Technology and Historical Collections, led by Luke Rosenberger, M.L.I.S., manages the library’s computer systems, Web site, technical infrastructure, the Knowledge Cooperative digital collections repository, and the library’s historical collection, programs and services. Division staff also consult on issues related to scholarly communication.
Digital and Special Collections
The Digital and Special Collections section, led by Anne Comeaux, M.L.S., is responsible for the University Archives, the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library, the UT Health Science Center Knowledge Cooperative and the UT Health Science Center’s records management program. The P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library has nearly 5,000 books on the history of the health sciences. The UT Health Science Center’s Knowledge Cooperative includes digital collections of medical illustrations for use in presentations and course content materials, historical materials from the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library, theses and dissertations from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and documents relating to the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
The records management program updates the UTHSCSA Records Retention Schedule (RRS) and trains staff in records management practices. Records Management Representatives appointed in each department work with the library to protect vital records and to ensure the timely disposition of records based on the retention periods designated in the RRS.
Systems Division
The Systems section, led by Sallieann Swanner, M.L.S., is responsible for the library computer systems including software, hardware and peripherals for the public and staff, and for printing services. Library Systems staff install application software and maintain operating systems; assist library users with computer equipment and software; and are also responsible for the proper licensing of library software. Systems staff provide technical support to the public who are accessing library services from outside the library.
